Electronic first curtain shutter (EFCS) with third party lenses?

Hi all,

I am very much considering finally taking the plunge and moving from Nikon DSLR to Sony mirrorless. I love Nikon, but Sony's tight integration with third party lenses is too tempting and I don't foresee Nikon getting access to major third party lenses too soon. I will likely move on an A7IV but had a quick question.

I understand the functioning of EFCS since I also shoot Olympus mirrorless. I noticed in the A7IV manual it states

  • "When a lens made by another manufacturer (including a Minolta/Konica-Minolta lens) is used, set this function to [Off]. If you set this function to [On], the correct exposure will not be set or the image brightness will be uneven."

Does this issue refer to major third party lenses designed for Sony e mount such as the Tamron 28-75mm  f/2.8 Di III,  Tamron  17-28 f/2.8 Di III, Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN art, or Tamron 150-500 f/5-6.7 Di III?

OR is this referring to older adapted lenses or cheap third party lenses?

My major reason for going Sony is their third party lens support and if they cause issues with EFCS I wound't be pleased.

Thanks!

-Justin
