I don't know what "signals" those firms get from Canon. Is it their own decision to abandon a certain system? Or does their decision depend on what Canon tells them?

At this point, both Tamron and Sigma have enough sales data on their prior EF-M mount lenses to use as a guide.  While the Sigmas may be popular in this forum, my sense is the majority of M system buyers tends to stick with just one or two kit lenses.
