I'm a very happy owner of an R5 camera with 4 RF "L" lenses, including the spectacular 100 - 500 mm zoom lens. I can afford an R3, but continue to choke when I remember the price ($6000 US). I simply can not justify that price given the resolution and overall capabilities of the R5.

Then today, I see that Nikon's Z9 is priced at only $5500 US and I wonder what Canon is thinking now. I'm surprised that no one on this forum has mentioned this up to now. Before Nikon's announcement, I was thinking that Canon's price for the R3 is very aggressive. Now I think it's just plain arrogant.

Let’s have a look

z9 has lower res viewfinder

z9 has lower resolution rear screen

z9 doesn’t have eye focus

z9 doesn’t have advanced hot shoe

z9 has no mechanical shutter

z9 doesn’t have incremental adjustment of shutter to eliminate flicker

z9 is slower frames per second

the z9 is more a r5 competitor

i will stick with the r3 order I have placed to go with the r5’s

don’t get me wrong I love Nikon and I hope the camera is a big success, I have a d850 and d6 and various lenses but they don’t get a lot of use alongside my canon kit.

let’s wait to see the price of the new Nikon 400 with built on 1.4x tc, I will predict £14000 here in the Uk

Can you please explain this:

Z9 doesn't have eye focus?

Z9 has 3D Auto Tracking which drops into appropriate mode based on subject. The actual focus box changes size based on size of subject from butterflies to Jets. And yes, it includes eyes.

And price differential could be attributed to things R5 does not have:

Z9 has built in Grip

Z9 has lighted controls

Z9 shoots at 120 fps

Z9 has dual CFExpress / XQD Card Slots

Z9 Heat dissipation

Z9 Flip screen in portrait mode with full screen rotation.

Z9 doesn’t have eye controlled focus, in that you can’t look at the object you want the camera to focus on like you can with the r3.

I never liked the 3D tracking on the d6

The z9 has a built in grip but using it alienates the front function buttons and a couple of the buttons around the shutter button which aren’t replicated when in portrait mode.

some of the controls are illuminated yes.

dial cf ext]press cards are nice and yes I wish the r5 and the r3 had that, the r1 will definitely have.

120fps is only for low res jpeg, I’ve never shot jpeg for years and I won’t shoot anything less that full size images.

flip screen is nice yes but it depends on usage, a lot like the fully articulating screens.

I might buy the z9 just for the 300 and 500 pf lenses, the rest of Nikons lenses I’m not interested in, I prefer Canons rf lenses and their designs.

Lot of people feel have an sd card is a big plus. Using the z9 requires one to switch completely to CFe B type cards, which is still pricey.

Flagships like these have always been double fast cards, like double CF and double CFast. These cameras aren't for people who want to use SD cards.

Are you sure this is even a flagship? Based on history and price, it is not. Also, Nikon would sell a lot more cameras had they released a mirrorless d850, which this is not.

The Z7II is the mirrorless D850 go check out any comparison on Youtube

I do not consider  the Z7 II is the D850 after playing with it for few weeks, that's why I hanged on to the D850 and keep waiting for the real D850 replacement and just pre-order the Z9, I will replace both my 1Dx and D850 with this Z9, just hope it actually perform as good as they promised.
