I don’t shoot lossless or lossy raw on any camera, the z9 hasn’t got a totally uncompressed raw mode. There is no free lunch.

I'm sure the Z9 has a lossless compressed raw format?

I think he's refencing the Z9 doesn't shoot uncompressed RAW at all. Which is correct. The Z9 only offer 3 different versions of compressed RAW. 2 lossy, one lossless.

Personally, I think Nikon's RAW files have always been pretty nice all the way around. Whether its color or dynamic range, I don't think they would shoot themselves in the foot by replacing uncompressed options with compressed options if it wasn't as good. So I wouldn't think there's anything to worry about there, but I'm sure it won't be long before its verified.

So why would anyone object to lossless Compressed RAW?....there is no downside, only the upside of taking up less storage.

We'll have to wait for him to chime in, but a common thought is there is a loss no matter how much the manufacturer tells you there isn't. I tend to agree with that thought. However, there is a level that is very much acceptable, IMO.

Lossless compression is just that, a completely reversible method; Nikon's had lossless compression for a very long time so I have no doubt that it is indeed lossless. The question is how good are the High Efficiency and High Efficiency* formats.
