z9 is a slightly better R5 for $1600 more.

I'm a proud owner of an R5 and I don't believe that assertion for a second.   The z9 is better than the R5 in almost every way.

-- hide signature --

stacked sensor which means no evf lag or blackout
--fastest full-frame camera sensor readout, which means virtually 0 rolling shutter defects
--20fps 14-bit RAW
--30fps in jpeg
--119fps in 11MP jpeg (and this is legit)
--at least 2 hours 8k video without overheating
--super sticky AF lock and tracking
--battery life that goes on and on

How does the R5 compare on these points?

--no stacked sensor, so there is evf lag
--moderate sensor readout with noticeable rolling shutter defects (think oval soccer balls)
--20fps with reduced 12-bit RAW
--no faster burst rate regardless of format
--8k video overheats after 1/2 an hour or sooner depending on conditions
--At least for mean AF lock is not certain and tracking is not sticky (personal experience)
--battery life can fade fast and performance is scaled back after battery drops to 60%

Now, the stickiness of the Z9 AF won't be known for certain before reviews.   But the first-look YouTubers seem to be highly impressed.

Taken together, the Z9 is substantially better than the R5.  Frankly, it is in a class above the R5.  The R5 is a great camera and is by far the best camera available without a stacked sensor.  But it does not compete with any of the stacked-sensor cameras announced or released this year.
