I'm a very happy owner of an R5 camera with 4 RF "L" lenses, including the spectacular 100 - 500 mm zoom lens. I can afford an R3, but continue to choke when I remember the price ($6000 US). I simply can not justify that price given the resolution and overall capabilities of the R5.

Then today, I see that Nikon's Z9 is priced at only $5500 US and I wonder what Canon is thinking now. I'm surprised that no one on this forum has mentioned this up to now. Before Nikon's announcement, I was thinking that Canon's price for the R3 is very aggressive. Now I think it's just plain arrogant.

Well if you consider the position (financially) that Nikon has been in for some time now, the least they needed to do was come to the table with a very tempting offer, both in the tech as well as price. It doesn't surprise me at all they've come with the Z9 at a price that is more than tempting for many. Everyone has a different need to be sure with their photography. Unless you are doing hour+ long 4k-8k video recording on a regular basis there is very little to prefer with a Z9 over a R5. I thought about this long and hard. Since I don't tend to shoot moving subjects where any level of rolling shutter would be an issue (IF I shot electronic shutter which I would say account for less than 10% of my shooting). An all electronic high speed shutter sounds delightful. But once again if you're a mainly electronic shutter shooter it might be more appealing.

The Z9 is geared all around shear "speed" shooting and all it's requirements. If you are shooting sports cars in action, heavy sports such as football, tennis, rugby etc. then it might have more appeal. But the R5 already does most things right for a LOT less $$$. The Z9 is purported to NOT likely have the 14.7 stops of dynamic range the R5 has. Personally I do events, weddings, portraiture, Real Estate and landscapes. So for ME the Z9 is of little appeal. The R5 in some cases may well exceed it's capabilities. I'll take the higher Rez viewfinder as well. I am very glad however that Nikon has at least taken steps to join the party instead of being an "also ran". altogether.

Name the gear and I've probably owned it and used it.
