You’ve raised some good points. I’m not in the ballpark for the z9 or R3 but I did switch from the D780 to the R6 due to AF performance. The z9 is a good camera but their z6 and z7’ii’s won’t have the z9’s af system. And I expect there’s more people like me willing to get an R6 over the z6 than there are people getting the flagships. And Nikon will still be missing these valuable customers and the lenses that go with the cameras. I can’t see Nikon has made much ground for their mid term future.

If the R6 is any indication, Nikon should be able to disseminate the AF down to any body they can afford to put their top line processor and ancillaries in. That suggests anything down to the Z6 and possibly the Z5, are potentially recipients. Obviously, I can't guarantee that, but again it looks good that other manufacturers can do it with hardware that wasn't bleeding edge.

However, that said, I doubt that will facilitate people jumping back to Nikon. It just simply entices them to stay and wait. But I think Nikon did well overall, and stopped the customer bleed-off they were having. Personally, I know someone who just killed a A1 order and de-listed his lenses for sale, so the plan is working.
