Damn, you were all right about the comments about stabilization and shutter speed.

The lens arrived today, and after experimenting with it for a while, it seems like it's pretty much impossible to shoot stationary objects with out without tripod. Even 1/500s didn't give me any decent results.

I'll take it to this weekend's zoo trip with a tripod and see what happens, but I think I will return it and keep saving for something with IS - but the only other option is the 100-400 II that cost twice as much 2nd hand.

As I said, this was an easy lens to let go of, for me. The aperture combined with lack of IS make it a very special purpose lens. It's simply not very versatile.

I have also found that, in general, comments that discuss the negatives of a product are more helpful than ones that simply rave about one. There's a good deal of selection confirmation and bias that people have trouble getting over, so praising a product they own is easier on the ego, although not necessarily helpful for those who look at things more objectively, including their own choices and decisions.

I'd rather work with the 300 f/4 IS w/ 1.4x teleconverter than this 400.
