I spent 3 weeks in Sept. 2019 in Tanzania, Kenya, & Uganda primarily using a 5DS with EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6. Never had the need to attach my 1.4 TC, especially on two gorilla treks in Uganda. Available light was fine. Actually got close enough to the gorillas that I used my EF 24-70 f/2.8 for some of my shots. Probably could have used my EF 70-200 f/2.8 but left it back at the camp. Going back in March 2022 and now have a R5. Expect to use my RF 100-500 without a TC for most of the time. Eye detection, IBIS, and lens IS will be a big step up.
