Canon T90 - no exposure scale

Hi folks,

I recently got a T90. It's in great shape cosmetically, but was dead when I got it. After fixing the dead part, it also had a stuck shutter. I've fixed that now, too, but I just noticed that I don't have an exposure scale on the right side of the viewfinder. The LED display at the bottom works fine, but the right side doesn't show anything. If I enable the backlight, I can barely see the markings in the right side display.

Is this a common failure in these cameras? Any suggestions?

Edit: Yikes! I just read near the end of the owners' manual where it says that the LCD display may become difficult to read after five years of use. Really? They don't clearly say which of the LCDs they're talking about here. The top panel LCD is perfect.
