A Guard Horse
3

Camargue horses, which live in herds in salt and freshwater marshes, often have a so-called "guard horse", who has the responsibility of keeping watch during group sleeping times. The guard horse will warn the sleeping horses in the herd of approaching danger.

In the picture below you can see three semi-wild Camargue horses resting peacefully in the marshes of the Isonzo Delta in Italy. Two are lying flat on the ground, while the third is on guard.

Camargue horses resting - The two horses on the left are probably in a short REM sleep. Yes, horses do have REM sleep, but it can be as short as 20 minutes and can be repeated as needed throughout the day.

Thanks for watching.
