For years I shot photos of dogs with that same combo, my D300 and 70-200 VR1.  ( There are lots in the galleries of the PBGV Club of America’s web site, PBGV.org.)  Now the D300 is in backup status as I’ve got a D500 and D850 now.  But any DSLR needs contrast to focus well, especially when the subject is moving.  Black eyes in a black face is a difficult target.
