No surprise, the M6 II is the better camera in autofocus. It’s also got more oomph in FPS, buffer, noise handling, plus uncropped 4K.
Now which camera is preferable? That’s the question…
and what is your answer?
Don't have one yet.
After a ton of shooting with it, it's fun, but, the M6 II is the better tool, as it should be.
There was a lot of speculation (on the forum) that the M50 Mark II has the better autofocus, nope. M6 II does, easily at that.
Now obviously if Canon gave the M6 II the M50 Mark II firmware upgrades, that'd improve it's already stellar AF.
It does reinforce the other chief compliant around here: an M5 Mark II really would be nice (it's obvious Canon won't do it though as the RF platform is their chosen path forward). I would agree after having had both the M50 Mark II and M6 Mark II. EFCS, DSLR-type body and a fully articulating screen aren't small potatoes. Neither is uncropped 4K, faster readout sensor with better noise and resolution, more FPS, either.
Well said. My experiences lead me to similar conclusions.
If I had to choose only one body, it'd be the M6ii for higher resolution and superior flexibility and features.
On a budget, and for those not needing the extra functionality, the M50ii is going to produce similar images for many uses.
As a second body for me the M50ii complements the m6ii nicely, due to its smaller size and weight (easier to bring in the camera bag and nice to use), and it has enough capability to do the job.
The only additional 'knock' I have against the m50ii is that when used in 'Silent mode' to get the fully electronic shutter (or any of the fully 'auto' modes), Custom Function menu selections are not available, and default values are used instead of customizations you might have set when the camera was in "creative modes" (Manual, Av. Tv, P).
This means none of your button customizations work --- and also the 'release lens without shutter' defaults to 'Disabled.' So the M50ii can NEVER be used with fully electronic shutter using a manual focus vintage lens or a telescope, you must use one of the Creative modes, forcing you to use the mechanical shutter (though, granted, with EFCS).
if you have a vintage lens on the camera and press the shutter button in any of the fully automatic modes --- the shutter will never fire, even though everything works including focus peaking etc.
Not recognizing the 'release shutter without lens' in the auto modes --- I'd call that a firmware bug. This is a 'fringe case' most users would never encounter, but I think the software team bailed and treated behavior for all the custom functions the same way as a group, instead of looking at them on a case-by-case basis.
The camera wants to be able to control the aperture setting in the auto modes ?
That is why ?
If you want to use old manual focus lenses the M6II is sometimes a better choice. When using old manual focus lenses on the M50, EFCS can sometimes be a problem.

Did they fix this problem on the M50II ? My M100 and M50 do it. The OP of that thread claims the M200 does not have this problem.
