Is it silly to consider the 300mm f/2.8 in 2021?

Hey folks,
I'm in the market for a new telephoto these days, and I'm a bit torn by the options. I'm the very happy owner of the 300mm f4 PF, but I've got the budget for something a bit better. I've had my eye on the 300mm f/2.8, or, the 500mm f/5.6 PF.
Using a TC 1.4 gets me in the 420 f4 range, and the TC2x will get it up to 600mm. Which makes the 300 2.8 a very versatile package.
Both lenses cost about the same, more or less, but given how much older the 300mm is, I wonder how it performs on the modern mirrorless offerings. (I use a Z6II)
Thanks in advance for your input!
