40mm f2 - Did Nikon design poorly for street use?
2

When the 40mm arrived last week, I never felt less enthusiasm for a lens that I had been waiting for for 3 years.   This is strange, I thought.

Finally opened the box, and immediately thought:  “It should be smaller and f2.8”.  (Or manual focus and smaller perhaps)   A major esthetic blunder.  Usable, but much less pleasant and less suitable for street spirit.  My god does it look boring.

Well, still this is a lens I need for chores, restaurants, darkness.   So I began using it, and noticed many photos that are too soft to be usable, especially at f2, especially compared to the other Z lenses I am used to.

Perhaps is they had let the lens become more expensive, it would have had better focus, contrast, etc.

Bottom line, from my perspective, and from initial use, it should have been

  • Smaller
  • f2.8
  • More expensive, with better IQ

It has become part of my lens rotation for going shopping or to a restaurant in the city or around the country doing chores.   It’s also pocketable for switching to when darkness falls on city streets.  To be shot at f2.8 at most.

Useful, but no joy at all.
