The foot is as arbitrary as the meter.

That's true, but ... that's not the point. Metric means that every measure can be constructed out of this basic unit.

You can make the same argument with Imperial units. Metric uses base ten, always, that’s the key.

We had 12 pence in one shilling, two shillings in one farthing, 10 farthings or 20 shillings in a pound.

16 ounces in a pound, 14 pounds in a stone, 8 stone in a hundred weight.

12 inches in one foot, three feet in one yard, 1760 yards in one mile.

It’s all perfectly logical and clear. I’m sure you agree.

I think you mean florin, not farthing.

A florin was two shillings; a farthing was 1/4 of an old penny, or 1/48th of a shilling.

And you forgot to mention the crown (five shillings) and half-crown (2/6d). And the guinea (21 shillings)

Metric is a stupid system. They used really complicated numbers such as:

1 UK Gallon = 4.54609 Litres

1 US Gallon = 3.78541 Litres

I mean, what were they thinking? Is that supposed to be easy to work out??

Plus, in some parts they call a Litre a Liter.... I mean, really?

Our friends in the US also came up with a daft system. When we already had a perfectly fine Gallon they had to come up with a smaller one that's also hard on the maths (not math):

1 US Gallon = 0.83267 "Proper" Gallons.

It used to be really simple......
