I’m running on windows 10. The antivirus software company that I’ve been using wants to increase my existing rate. Do I (really) need it in order to protect my system or should I just cancel my subscription and use whatever windows provides? Is that good enough or not?

My brother in law told me that paying for extra antivirus software is a “gimmick” is that true?

A conditional "nope". The condition is that we all use our computers differently. Win10 has been very stable and secure for me - but I'm don't visit certain sites, like Facebook. I also don't visit game sites, coupon sites, "too good to be true", or download much. My Win10 computer is for business.

I'm not knocking any of the AV makers, but Microsoft has gotten the message: secure this OS.

At worst, an AV can actually be too aggressive, with too many false positives, and using too much resources.

PS: I don't run an AV on my Chromebook or any of my Android devices, either.
