I'll take it to this weekend's zoo trip with a tripod and see what happens, but I think I will return it and keep saving for something with IS - but the only other option is the 100-400 II that cost twice as much 2nd hand.

Congrats on new lens, I write before that you will need higher then 1/500 shutter speed since you didn’t use such lens before and you will need to master handholding technique, try to stop breath , lean to something for beginning and take burst shots , then you will have more keepers.
