[Edit]: Maybe I've used the wrong word here. The images are not cropped, but significantly stretched in the corners. Which also leads to loss in resolution.
The only objective comparison is the end result. It's not that optically corrected lenses have the same resolution in corners as their center. So, stretched as it may be, how does it compare to anything else of same quality that came before it. Were the EF counterparts much better?
That’s the problem: there isn’t an “EF counterpart.” The closest things to RF 16mm F2.8 are EF 14mm F2.8L II, EF 16-35mm F2.8L III, Sigma 14mm F1.8 Art, Sigma 14-24mm F2.8mm Art, and Tamron 15-30mm F2.8, but all are huge in comparison and cost around 3-6 times as much.
I bought it to replace an EF17-40L, and the RF16 is better in every way, apart from not being able to to zoom.
