My apprach to DxO and dynamic range

how do you assert fine control over DR from within DXO? I say, "Life is a learning opportunity, don't waste it."

IMO, start by changing the color rendering from the default to "Neutral color, neutral tonality". That gives you a 'flatter' image, from which you can then use curves and/or other controls to do what you want with the dynamic range that the camera captured. You can of course turn on and off the shadow and highlight clipping indicators to see where things stand.
