Microsoft Defender is one of the better options out there. From best to worst for me has been.

  • Bitdefender (because of its features)
  • Microsoft Defender
  • Avast (but can be very aggressive, not necessarily a bad thing)
  • Webroot
  • Kaspersky

I've used Bitdefender, Webroot, and Kaspersky over several hundreds of machines. I typically use Defender as a baseline to compare new AV I'm testing.

I like Comodo Firewall to get a decent idea of network traffic but it can be tedious and it's getting harder and harder to analyze since legit and malicious traffic often goes through AWS or Azure. Before, it would often go out to a random server on another country over port 80 so it was easy to catch.
