Your post is yet another example of why Nikon needs to hurry up and get it right. The question is whether it is too late for Nikon to recover (from what I consider a serious management misjudegement/mistake with mirrorless) and ever regain the #2 position. I suspect it is. I can only guess where Nikon would be today if they had made the Sony decision years ago that mirrorless was going to be the future.

They may eventually be #2 again, but at a much lower level than at their best, when they carried 40% a very large ILC/lens market. I think Canon is going to gain even more market share, they are doing everything right, and Sony and Nikon will fight for who will be 2nd at about 20% of the market, if that much. It’s looking increasingly like a monopoly by Canon in some aspects.

This is also why I am very optimistic that the Z9 is going to be amazing and that Nikon will quickly trickle down the technology into cheaper models.

Let’s hope.
