I've just had an idea. Considering the lens is still in production since 1993 (according to Wikipedia), do you think the newer (like from the past ten years or something) ones could possibly have better image quality due to better manufacturing process or something?

I don't know but I did not care for this lens because while it's light enough to use handheld, it does not have image stabilization. So it really requires a tripod, which then negates the advantage of being light enough to be handheld.

Add to that the 5.6 aperture, and it's just an unfortunate set of compromises, and it was an easy lens to let go of, for me at least.

I would not be tempted to repurchase a lens like this, regardless of quality.

sure it doesn't have IS but it is so nicely designed and balanced that handholding this lens is not big deal. i never used tripod with my 400 f5.6 and my keeper rate is at least 80-90%. if you work on your handholding techniques, IS becomes irrelevant. here is a shot that i used this lens handheld, i think it looks decent:

canon 400 f5.6+1.4x II TC.
