EOS 20D/40D and Canon 600mm f4 IS (original, not II or III)

Hello,

I am fortunate to live on the seashore. We have lots of cetacean activity in front of our house.

We're not pro photographers by any means but we do like to capture the whale activity as much as possible. We have a Canon EOS 20D and a Canon EOS 40D with 50mm-250mm telephoto lenses. These are fine, but they don't get us as close as we'd like to.

We see that there are Canon 600mm f4 IS lenses available on eBay from Japan at ~$5,000. These are the original, not the II or III.

Our question is: If we aren't looking for modern quality or perfection and would just like to have enough definition/clarity for a nice 8x10 print, will mating the canon 600mm f4 IS with the 20D or 40D work?

Thank you so much in advance
