The Z6 is able to AF quickly, in AF-S or AF-C, but it is the subject tracking that is lacking: too many times the camera will get confused and lock on a background subject (I experienced similar things with the Sony A7 II, although the Z6 is a bit faster when it works). My D750 would more reliably track under similar conditions (when it would fail it would rather be because of a foreground distraction rather than a background one).

What sets the Sony A9 and similar cameras aside is really the computing power and the refinement of the tracking algorithms. With a stacked sensor, updated CPU and algorithms, let's hope Nikon finds the magic sauce with the Z9.

Canon released an R3 that is improving on the 1Dx III in many respects, I would not be surprised if Nikon did the same with the Z9 compared to the D6.
