Some lenses, especially when you get to cinema lenses can weight many kilograms.

A rails system helps support the lens, making sure you're not stressing the lens mount itself on your camera and maintaining a consistent FFD so all the focus witness marks will still work.

It also allows you to mount other accessories like remote focus motors and matte boxes for extra external filters and sun shades.
