whether the infamous A9 banding would be a real problem.

Not in the vast majority of the pictures you will take

I’d pick a D5, Z9 will end up going the same route the Sony A7Ii and Z6 which I’m confident will leaving wanting better AF

Totally disagree. Nikon understands that the Z9 is the D6 successor and will make sure its AF is as good if not better than the D6 and the A9II.

Nikon will never make a MILC camera that beats its flagship DSLR ,I’d like to say they ain’t that stupid but you never know ,

Then they are stupid (not!): they've developed the Z9 sensor that no sensor of the D6 family can compare to. So much for "never make an MILC camera that beats its flagship DSLR".

Nikon is not going to abandon its DSLR flagship line just because they made its first pro body Z ,

No, they are not going to abandon its DSLR flagship line, But they are going to give much more attention to the Z cameras than to the F bodies. In fact they already have: since the D6 was announced, Nikon has introduced one new dSLR (D780) and five Z cameras (Z5 Z6II Z7II Zfc and Z9 right round the corner). It has also stopped manufacturing several F mount lens while introducing new Z lenses at a steady pace.

to even think that is ridiculous, a D7 is in the works and it’s AF will be top notch , the Z equivalent will always lag behind

Your prediction is out of touch with reality. For instance, there should have been a D850 successor out by now. And there is not. Not promising for "the D7 in the works".

Much more realistic is that Nikon is aware that the competitors to the Z bodies are not its own dSLR but Sony and Canon. The A9II has been out for a while so Nikon knows the standard it has to match (at least) with the Z9.

They may drag themselves back into the game. But they'll never drag themselves to the top of the game. That's another ship that has sailed.

And there's now an Alpha as well to compete with. And an Alpha II before they revise the Z9.

When even Lance has conceded that the Z AF is not there, well that's a milestone and a good data point. The Z9 being there at D6 level or above AF wise does absolutely nothing for 99% of Zee buyers. There are very few fellows in this forum with D6 s, satisfied to stick with the D4s or D5 for several reasons, a lot of times being cost. It will be the same with the Z9. It's like waiting for our Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup. Every year it's "this is the year" Well except the years there's no hope. There will be years before Nikon has put another two updates of Z9 behind them. They are simply never catching up. So many fellows, including now Reilly and Garfield from here on DPR who have moved their business to Sony. Go over on FM and there are several formerly staunch Nikon shooters, who have moved their business to Sony or Canon. You yourself was debating moving to Sony. So am I.

What we are left with here in the Nikon DSLR forum are a few imperfect records continuing to spew the same old music when it comes to the position of the Zees in the hierarchy of it all.

Maybe "this is the year" For the Leafs.

Which means indeed that it will exceed the D6 AF in many ways.

Spot on. Nearly 12 years with nikon never once considered a move but now I am looking at canon and sony very seriously. I am fed up.
