Since it seems unlikely that my carrier Rogers will ever offer the Surface Duo 2, was wondering if it makes sense to buy a locked AT&T Surface Duo for around US$415 and unlock it for use in Canada. It’s slightly more for the 256GB version. Huge discount over initial prices, but still steep for something the carrier could lease 2 years for almost nothing.
I have one data only line that I use with my ancient Moto G4 Plus, that I find far more practical for browsing the web and using YouTube than the 8” tablets I got for free from Rogers. I use it also as a HD external screen for one very interesting qDSLR software.
Was thinking to upgrade that cellphone, and dual screen would be perfect, since I can check a YouTube video and double check facts. Or chat and use browser, or something similar.
Was looking the negatives, and it seems they wouldn’t be a problem for me. I wouldn’t use it as phone, the slightly slower CPU/GPU would be a huge upgrade over my 5 years old phone and I seldom take cellphone pictures since I always have a DSLR or MIL camera with me. Apparently the software has been updated with fixes for bugs and crashes. And on eBay they charge around US$10 to unlock the phones.
The other upgrade option is to wait for a great offer from Rogers and lease for two years something like the Samsung S20 FE for almost, or sometimes literally, free.
I am getting a duo as well. I really want the duo 2 but since telus will not have it locally, I am just going to get a samsung S21 Ultra and get the duo first edition for work doing work things. IMO, I would buy a factory unlocked version of the duo as AT&T more than likely will withhold updates etc, until they are ready, not when MS is ready. Keep that in mind. I would also buy the 256gb version as there is no SD card slot to upgrade storage in the future.
