On full-frame cameras, a key reason for me was  a much wider distribution of autofocus points.

Tied with that was the elimination of the necessity of doing autofocus micro adjust for each and every lens on each and every camera.

A thirrd reason was that it is very obviously the direction  camera technology has been heading since the introduction of autofocus. Modern SLR form-factor dates back to the introduction of the Nikon F in the late 1950s, or possibly to the original Hasselblad 1000 of the early 1950s.
