Nikon 300mm f/2.8 (1st non VR version) or Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 Sports

Long-time reader first time posting here.

I am planning on buying a lens to use with my d500 for sports photography, mostly football (soccer), but also some indoor sports from time to time.

I've been thinking of buying either:

1.Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 Sports or

2. Nikon 300mm f/2.8 (first non VR version) + Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II

Price would be similar for both options (Sigma being a bit cheaper than those two combined).

I wanted to ask a few questions:

1. How's the AF on the Sigma, is it fast enough for sports? Same for Nikon 300mm, is the autofocus noticeably slower compared to newer versions?

2. About IQ. How big is the difference in image quality between 300mm version I and newer versions? Is Sigma @ 300mm close to the Nikon, or is there a noticeable difference?

Sigma seems more compact. Since I will be using only one body I may be missing out on action while switching between 300mm and 70-200mm lenses mid-game, but at the end I think that AF and IQ will be decisive factors for me when choosing.

Also, I know both of this lenses are quite heavy but I will be using a monopod 99% of the time so that shouldn't be a problem.

Any response will be highly appreciated.
