Unfortunately Mirrorless cameras cannot utilize the Infrared AF system of the Flash so they are incapable of fast focus in a dark room, where a DSLR would be activating that system and focusing in a snap even when the subject is in motion. This remains their Achilles heel vs a DSLR.

Mirrorless cameras also do not focus with the lens wide open unless you are actually set to expose with the lens wide open.

Not so great solutions:

Shoot at a more open Fstop with apply settings to live view on

Focus on something more contrasty

Use a light over the camera, like a lume cube.

Turn the lights up in the room

I still use use my DSLR as my flash camera in a dark room and my Z6 with a 1.4 prime wide open as my ambient light camera. In my view a Z camera still cannot be used for photographing, movement in particular, in a room with very little light or where only the background is lit.
