That was true in the early days of smartphones, but iPhones from the 6s model onward can expect to receive at least seven years of manufacturer's updates.

Samsung have announced they will no longer be supporting the galaxy 8and 8+, released 29 March 2017, that is four years ago.

I’ve owned several inexpensive Samsung tablets over the years, but they never had more than two or three years of updates. I had to upgrade primarily because the apps I used would no longer work on the older operating systems. Only one of them actually stopped working, and that was due to saltwater corrosion.

My iPhones never had a problem with updates, but rather would get damaged.
