Have you tried a mini-tripod? I don't mean a tabletop but something like a Slik Mini-Pro? They fit in a back pocket but when spread and braced against your chest, they do as good as a monopod if not better.

Right on! Just like I was describing...

How about if you are shooting through the viewfinder (200mm)? Not convinced the gorilla pod will help but always open to suggestions

Well, situational and spatial awareness both improve greatly when using the back LCD to compose.  And I think that the 55-200 is light enough to not necessitate using the EVF for stability (YMMV tho).

You can bend the legs of the Gorillapod in such a manner as to be able to use the EVF though too (it's very versatile).  Stability seems very good when held in this manner (one leg into the chest).  A lot depends on what frequencies you need the most help with however.  I would think the lens' image stabilization would help with the higher frequencies.

I have the big Gorillapod (the one with the metal legs), and also the big Gorillapod ballhead.  I like both an awful lot.  Highly recommended.
