Thanks to those who answered. It turns out that you cannot track an animal on the A6600!! Weird that they offer animal "face/eye" detection but can't track the critter; however if you choose human instead it will track your child just fine. The a9 update offers both animal and human so I would have expected the A6600 update to allow animal tracking focus modes as well.

Here is the reply from Sony Chat this AM.

It should just use the normal tracking when it can't find a face/eye, instead of having to switch into human to get the normal tracking functionality.

The odd thing is that both APS-C and FF cameras do not have Animal Face detection. With Animal Eye AF it falls back to normal Tracking AF, with Human Eye AF it first falls back to face detection AF and then to normal AF.

The combination Animal Eye AF and AF-C is so blazingly fast that it almost feels like it's tracking the subject. With more than one animal in view it tends to keep the focus on the eye of the same animal while you half-press the shutter button. I really don't mind that it's technically not tracking AF; it works great.
