I bought the G9X when it came out in December 2015. I wanted to upgrade for the mark II, however upon seeing the review on this website, it seemed to me that the picture quality is either the same or even a bit softer, so I skipped it and thought I'm just going to buy the mark III a year or two later. Of course at that point I didn't know the III is not going to be out for another 5 years (so far).

There is no reason to assume that the mark II would be producing images that are softer than the mark I so they probably had a bad copy. Jeff Keller admitted in the comments that It could have been sample variation but never added this remark to the review (unlike reviews of other cameras we're they suspected sample variation). I think there is something strange about the review of the mark II.

There have been rumours about the release of a mark III more than a year ago. But it still isn't released maybe it will be released after corona and the chip shortage has ended but I wouldn't be surprised if it will never be released.

Consequently I shot more than 20.000 photos on the G9X. It's still working perfectly well,

That's good to hear!

however I now use it mostly for video. I had the Pixel 2, 3 and now 4XL and it's just so much easier with the dynamic range and everything, that I don't see much point in carrying a dedicated camera anymore. Sure if you pixel-peep the camera is still better, but not by much.

For me the main reason for using a dedicated camera is the ergonomics. I don't like shooting with a phone.

When It comes to video the G9X II is not my preferred camera. I always struggle with the focus. I'm slowly starting to understand how to get it to focus where I want it.

Which brings me to another question - have you compared the video recording on G9X mark I vs. mark II? I wanted to get a decent low-light camera just for videos and the mark II is very reasonably priced, but I wonder if I'm going to see any improvement at all.

I have never owned a mark I so I can't tell if the mark II is better.
