That camera originally came with DX AFS-VR II lenses, the 18-55 and 55-200.

Later models of the D3300 came with an upgraded DX AFP VR version of the 18-55.  It’s a slightly better lens and is silent too.  So is a better buy.  I still use that lens on my D3300 when working in that range as it surprised me when I got it.

They are both very good. And they are both collapsible lightweight and compact lenses, characteristics that mate very well to that camera.

I'd also point out something about your friend's camera: The D3300 was the last camera in that series to offer an accessory port. So your friend should be in no hurry to upgrade to a D3400/D3500.

I’d also advise anyone against upgrading to either of the latter to models.  As you note, features went missing on the later models.  The D3300 was the high water model in that series and the 24Mp DX sensor is the same one as used in higher end models And it can produce results to match.
