Tinkering with 3D photography again got me thinking, did any of the astronauts take 3D photos while on the surface of the moon? The answer is "kinda". They did not have a Realist camera, but through special editing (the book explains it) some have been put together in a book. It is written by David Eicher (Astronomy Magazine) and Brian May (guitar player for the band Queen and he also studied physics and mathematics at Imperial College London). The book is about the Apollo space program that landed man on the moon. The book comes with an OWL viewer (that Brian produces) so you can see the stereo images. The forward is written by Charlie Duke (Apollo 16) and the afterword by Jim Lovell (Apollo 8 and Apollo 13 - the mission that almost didn't make it back to earth) A lot of talented people have been involved in this project and it look like a very good effort.
I grew up during the early space program and Apollo was going on while I was at college. It was an exciting time for space science and exploration. I was also interested in astronomy and it was even one of my minors. I continue to be interested to this day and even made my own 6" telescope mirror about 20 years ago and just took the telescope out this evening to look at Jupiter and Saturn. So you see, I just had to get this book! I'm really looking forward to reading it. Has anybody else gotten it yet?
