Have you try to limit the number of focus boxes in used ( to reduce the chances for the AF system to lock focus on unwanted places, also a faster operation),  better using pre focus (says, half hit shutter or BBF until the green focus confirmation box covers your aimed target)...

Too wide focusing area, too many objects in the area having similar/or lack of the required contrast, longer lens will be affected by atmospheric elements easier, less amount of light (the physical size of the lens) etc will also affect the AF.

Not to mention the AF speed of the system plays a big role on this. On certain lenses of my M43 system, I would need to wait for an extra moment for the AF system to work than some other lenses.

Every camera has its own compromises that we have to live with and get around of them.

Over my last 16 years shooting with panasonic (compacts, superzoom, M43), might be I am very lucky, never really have one camera has real hardware problem on AF. Proper operation usually can eliminate most of problem.

Wishing you do not have a bad copy.
