I agree.  I think I even replaced the one that comes with the Rode VideoMic with a more substantial one, as the Rode wasn't effective enough outdoors.

One thing you might try to do with the fan is orient it as far off axis to the mic as possible, both horizontally and vertically, yet still keep your speaker "cool".  I was surprised how bad the wind noise got when I had the mic below the table compared to above the speaker.  I'm estimating the mic was maybe 20-30 degrees above the fan wind direction and that helped a lot.  Also, if your studio/room has some less reflective surfaces than my hard surface garage, the directionality of the mic will help more in reducing the fan noise.  As always getting the mic as close as possible to the speaker helps more than anything else.

Good luck with your project.  I needed the practice and wanted to see exactly what to expect if I wanted to run my fan in my shop anyway, so it was a good exercise for me, too.
