I've been traveling with a 15" MBP (mid-2015) which is in need of retirement. I also carry an even older iPad mini which largely serves as a giant iPod at this point. I do a fair amount of post in LR and PS on the MBP while traveling and use a portable SSD to backup on the go, reconciling all via GoodSync to a Mac mini M1 each time I return home. I am trying to become a bit more agile (i.e., lighten my carryon bag) going forward. Has anyone who travels frequently migrated from carrying a MBP down to only an iPad Pro? If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

It is possible not to travel with a computer. The main reason I travelled with a computer is to backup photos from camera to another storage like hard drive. Now it is not necessary. Instead of MacBook+iPad, I can travel with only iPad Pro (latest version). Saving at least 3 pounds in the carryon and not take anything out at security.

  • Apps like Affinity (their iPad version is almost identical to the desktop version) and Adobe software, is used to edit selected files for sharing while in travel. Using Apple pencil makes things a little easier. I don't know about you, but I do most of my serious editing when I go back home on iMac.
  • The File app works perfectly for backing up photos from SD cards to SSD Hard drives or flash drives using a USB-C hub that has a card reader slot. It takes @1min/1GB. I shoot in RAW, so I usually have 5-6 GB to back up everyday.
