Where does being lucky play a part in this? Prior planning and (exceptional) execution diminish the need for luck to play a larger role, but don't they often go hand-in-hand?

I use this image by famed photographer Tom Mangelsen as an example. The planning (knowing where to go) and execution (knowing how to shoot in less than favorable conditions) were critical....but being there at the exact moment couldn't have been planned (is he lucky?).

Great image there.  It's a fact that a just a little luck can be worth more than a whole lot of talent.
