R5, Low light

Pirates on the Potomac

OK, I just got a new (refurb) R5, and I am just starting to learn the camera.

Yesterday evening, I decided to crank up the ISO just to see how bad it would get at higher settings.  I am frankly amazed at the results.  The attached photo is one of several I took at ISO 51,200.  At smaller display sizes, it was perfectly usable, right out of the camera.  The shot posted here is one that I ran through DXO, and it looks good on a 32" 4K monitor.

Added to that is the exceptional stabilization.  This shot was taken handheld at 1/200 second, using an EF 100-400L II, zoomed all the way out to 400mm.

The bottom line is that after reading reviews of the R5 over the last year or so, I expected a distinct improvement over my R, but I wasn't expecting the difference to be this dramatic.

Suffice it to say that, based on first impressions, I'm a happy camper right now.
