Replacing head in entry level tripod?

I bought this tripod a few years ago:

https://www.amazon.com/Albott-Digital-Aluminum-Portable-Monopod/dp/B017IS057O/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

I am now looking to replace only the head as the cheap plastic head doesn't give me a whole lot of stability. The tripod itself is sturdy and holds up pretty well in astro photography, but I would like to install a ball head like a vanguard or manfrotto. Yes my current cheap plastic head can be unscrewed from the tripod and I'm left with a 1/4" screw at the top.

With that in mind I have a question:

1) do I need any a sort of "base plate" to install a ball head on top of one of this tripod or can i just purchase a ball head and use a 3/8 - 1/4 screw adapter and install it on my tripod?
