Re: Pileated Woodpecker takes a sip

Nice

I've never seen these larger woodpeckers around here ... until yesterday. We get the smaller 'peckers in several trees in the yard and even, curiously, on the center stalk of a yucca plant. But a pair of the larger birds arrived in the front yard that seemed to be traveling with several pairs of cardinals. They didn't stay long. They took off just as I went to grab my camera. I watched for them the rest of the day, they did not return.

Do these birds primarily travel in pairs like the cardinals ? They were definitely a bonded pair as they sat right next to each other on the fence and knocked or swiped beaks.
