To me, it makes shooting more fun, with some of the pleasure of using a dslr. I use the exposure meter to judge exposure mostly, and after some practice have regained my old exposure skills. It's always a nice surprise to see a shot turn out on the back the way I imagine it.

Fuji seems to strike a nice compromise mimicking a glass viewfinder, using a low contrast image, but still allowing blown highlights to be shown in red, and a fairly accurate histogram.

Sounds like you'd love an X-Pro, which offers an actual glass finder, which can be switched to an EVF with the flick of a lever
