Photographing Insects - Macro Lens?

Hi, I'm not a beginner but....

I visited a garden last week and decided to challenge myself by taking only a 1:1 macro lens (also works as a standard 28mm lens for general snapshots). I don't get to use this lens often so it made a change. I figured I'd get some nice shots of bees. Wrong. The depth of field even at f/11 was not conducive to getting a good shot. Also things like butterflies fly away if you poke a lens right up to them.

I feel I'm having to re-educate myself as to what a macro lens is good for. In this scenario I feel I would have been far better off using something in the 100-400mm range and standing 2 meters away. Any advice?
