When I travel I'm often on foot much of the time so weight and size are very important to me.

If I every lens weighed no more than a few ounces and was a pancake lens (imagine a 600mm pancake!) I would carry all my gear all the time.

There's no reason for your walk-around and hiking lenses to weigh more than a few ounces. The Nikon DX AF-S VRii 18-55 zoom weighs 6.9 ounces. The 55-200 from the same series weighs 10.6 ounces. Stuck indoors in some museum all day, the DX 35mm f/1.8 weighs 7oz.

If 10.6 oz is too heavy, leave the long zoom in the hotel room sometimes.

A camera to go with these lenses doesn't have to be large or heavy either.  The D5500 for instance is only 15oz.

I've hiked for days through rugged mountain wilderness, no trails, carrying these lenses and similar. They are not what I would consider heavy.  I've hiked with heavy gear before, and this isn't.
