PS The more I look at your posted images the less I'm convinced that it's oil and that it's nothing to be concerned about

Compared to what I saw in my 135mm lens, I cannot see any oil in your two photos. I would not return it to the seller.

Thank you all for your input.  I may have over-reacted because of the lens' reputation.

I'll keep it; if oil does become a problem I'll clean it and sell it.

I do store lenses front-element up, and based on advice here will continue.
