55-200 vs 70-300. Anyone done a meticulous comparison?
1

Hi,

My interests are landscape and nature, usually shot hiking.  I've had the 55-200 for quite a few years.  I find it very sharp and use it mostly in the 70-135 range.  I also use an adapted MF 300/4L and 1.4x TC for a bit of wildlife.    (I've never found much need for the in-between 135-200-250mm FLs. )  I'm wondering about the 70-300, which would let me carry one lens and add AF, OIS, EXIF etc at 300mm.  I wouldn't keep both.

There are a lot of images posted from the 70-300 and they look pretty good, but that tells very little in any comparative sense.  Images from the 55-200 look pretty good too.  I'd like to hear from anyone who has both and tested the two side by side in that 70-135 range.  Do you have any comparison images you'd be happy to share?  And if you haven't, do you have any general IQ observations about your switch to the 70-300?  And has anyone compared the 70-300 @ 300 with a decent (ED/L/apo) prime?

Thanks.

Cheers, Rod
