Thoughts on rangefinder vs SLR

A lot of Magnum photographers have used Leica M cameras throughout their career, and many of them have said that the rangefinder is superior to the SLR for photography.
A couple examples are Garry Winnogrand and Joel Meyerowitz.

Why do you think they stated that? And they stated it boldly as a fact. Part of their argument was that there was no blackout from a mirror flapping around. And that you can see outside the frame.

Garry Winnogrand also said that What You See Is What You Get, from an SLR will influence your photos in a way that’s different from a rangefinder.

To me, these are valid points, especially helpful for capturing the decisive moment, but, I get a sense of elitism that Leica rangefinders are the best and only tool for photography of this caliber.
